Empowering education
“Empowering education, as I define it here, is a critical-democratic pedagogy for self and social change. It is a student-centered program for multicultural democracy in school and society. It approaches individual growth s an active,cooperative, and social process, because the self and society create each other.” This quote stuck out to me because I feel as though our time spent in this fned class is meant to open our eyes to the flaws of the education system in which we as current students want to be a part of. We are forced to be made aware of the inequalities faced everyday by many students nationwide and are given the tools to explore the required material and turning the normalized learning into empowering learning therefore correct the flaws in the system and allowing students to have a better learning experience than that of students before them.
“The difference between empowering and traditional pedagogy has to do with the positive or negative feelings students can develop for the learning process.” I chose this quote because as a future educator I want to make sure that I am providing an empowering and non restrictive education for my students as well as make sure that they do not fall victim to the numerous negative affects of teacher-centered politics such as many negative attitudes and beliefs that students start to form about themselves and school. I want to form an environment in which my students can freely and comfortably form then express their own ideas and beliefs.
“ I began in a participatory and critical way by posing the subject matter itself as a problem. The course was offered to help students become good writers, but rather than lecturing on what that involved or meant, I asked them to first establish their understandings of it.” This quote is one from the author Ira Shor about how they used problem posing in their class and it makes me think of one of the classes i took at RIC which aisles happened to be a english course in which the professor made the whole class go back to the begging of writing with sentence structure and the writing basics eventually and somewhat unannounced to the class, all the students were writing a 5 page paper the whole time just broken down into different smaller parts for student understanding exhibition.
