Christensen
Unlearning the Myths That Bind Us is a writing piece written by Linda Christensen. Christensen has the opinion that “ Our society’s culture industry colonizes their minds and teaches them how to act, live, and dream. This indoctrination hits young children especially hard.”. I think this is especially true today in 2018 as technology is so dominant our young children have access to the internet, giving them almost unlimited access to the world and whats happening in it. This can lead to the young children adapting their behavior to mimic what they see online or in movies or of others, especially as children don't know as much as people older than them and can fall into the stereotypes being put forward by society. This can be referred to as the “secret education”.
Christensen then goes on to give an example of the affects of dissecting society and the secret education on one of her students. The student responded with “ Personally handling ht dissection of dreams has been a major cause of depression for me. Not so much dissecting- but how I react to what is found as a result of the operation. It can be overwhelming and discouraging to find out my whole self image has been formed mostly by others underneath my worries about what i look like are years of being exposed to TV images of girls and their set till given to them by TV and the media.” I strongly agree with this statement and think that part of problem is that it is easier and less painful to not change and stay under the stereotypes as opposed to dissecting them and going against them. Young children also aren't given any tool to combat the stereotypes or any strategies for dealing with the findings in a way that don't negatively affect the young children.
Christensen ends her writing piece by giving the reader a couple of examples of what to look for when dissecting dreams and society. She tells how Duck tales appears to be cute and meaningless yet the show secretly revolves around money, which can affect how kids perceive money and how they handle it. I found this writing peace to be very interesting and think that it should be read on a wider scale in America and has helped further change how I view the media.
I really like the point you made of technology playing such a large role in young kids lives, giving them the access to see all views of a character's roles that they look up to so wholeheartedly.
ReplyDelete^ I also liked the point you made about technology being such a big part of life and how we see things or act. I used this point to create my own blog post that explores the power that the media has and how those who control it need to be more aware of that and use that platform to send the right messages.
ReplyDelete^I also agree with the point you made about technology being a major influence on the lives of children today, and unfortunately it can be a negative one. I feel parents should be monitoring their children's use of computers, mainly 12 and under, esp. when on YouTube and other social media sites.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the point you made about technology and how it plays a large roll in the lives of children. My niece is two and already has her own iPad I mean how sad is that... imagine when she is our age what technology will be like and how much it will control the lives of people. It's crazy you go out in public or even to a sporting event and look around aand I am 99% sure you will see 9 out of every 10 people on their phones.
