Podcast

undefinedIn this podcast Nikole Hannah-Jones speaks on her experiences with school district desegregation.  Who even is Nikole Hannah-Jones?  Well she is an investigative reporter at The New York Times, and was reporting on the schools in Durham, North Carolina.  At the time of the placement it was the height of the No Child Left Behind era.  Jones was trying to go around and improve upon all the bad schools in the district and the students in those schools.  She observed through her time in the field that rarely if ever did the bad schools “catch up” to the good schools and not for a lack of trying.  Nikole then goes on to talk about how integration in schools has helped to split the achievement gap in half almost. Nikole pointed out that in 1971 black student test scores were 39 points behind the white kids yet in 1988 when desegregation was at its height the gap fell to 19 points.  This makes me wonder if integrations seems like such an easy an efficient fix then why isn't it as popular as it should have been and although it may be true is any schools fate predetermined on wether it will be sussecful in producing well educated students or not.  Later in the podcast Nikole brings up her experience watching the Micheal Brown coverage and how she remembers the mother telling the police that she struggled so hard to keep her son in school nd on a path to graduation and they killed him for nothing.  The podcast then brought up the post that the school districts still have to pay the students education even if the students aren't present in the school near them.  This can mean transportation costs and city costs to pay for the new schooling.  This all can be very costly.  In the 2013- 2014 school year Jones referenced she mentioned that it cost 10.4 million dollars in transportation of the students alone.  Iw wonder how we can make integration easier and more prevalent so that all students have an equal chance at a good education and no one ends up forced to stay in school over dropping out to make money other ways.
