social justice events
For my social justice event Watched the movie He Named Me Malala. It is a fairly recent release as it was released in October of 2015 in Germany, the movie also won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation. The film, a documentary, follows Pakistani teenager Malala Yousafzai who became well known around the world for speaking out about the inequalities of girl’s education in Pakistan. Since she did speak out and go against the social and cultural norms and brought attention to the world the terror group called the Taliban decided they try to kill her for speaking out, shooting her in their assignation attempt. Despite their best attempts the bullet did not kill her and she and her family were moved to Britain where she began to emerged as a head advocate for children’s and women’s rights in the Middle East, later receiving the Nobel Peace Prize becoming the youngest ever Noble Peace Prize Laureate. I feel as though this movie can relate to some of the reading were have done in class such as Delpit’s codes of power and how Malala went against them. August can also be seen in the marginalized females in the Pakistan education system and how if students don't feel safe they can not learn properly.
The second movie I watched was The Hand That Feeds, which is again another documentary film, winning many awards. This time the film followed 12 undocumented immigrants working at a popular bakery, they faced decoration and the film follows their actions as they fought to stay in their new home. The workers are being payed sub-legal wages, their manager was abusive and treated them unfairly, and the workers had to work with dangerous machinery while at work. It was stated that the bakery manager would fire them if they called in sick, something that would not happen to a resident worker. The group of workers decide to band together and form an independent union. I found it interesting that tis film took place in New York as New York is a melting pot full of immigrants from all over the world and has been for a while, and it must have taken so much courage to speak out and fight the system that was oppressing these workers and hopefully lead the charge for other workers who are in need of justice. I also found it interesting to find out that New York has labor laws that even protect undocumented immigrants and I feel as though these laws and resources aren't known to the people in which they are intended to protect. August would have liked this film as well as Johnson, and Delpit.
